I was smitten—a few drinks away from tattooing his name on my chest surrounded by little rainbow hearts—smitten. While people might say this overwhelming swell of emotion was lust and a manifestation of my sex-addled brain, I didn’t care. It was a fucking delight.

If I wasn’t sure after Saturday, I’d confirmed it Sunday morning when I woke up with Jesse asleep in my arms and I felt this sense of total contentment. Like he was exactly what I’d imagined when I told Zach I wanted to be in a relationship with a man.

We enjoyed so many of the same things—food, hobbies, movies, television shows, music. Whether we were goofing around or talking about how much it sucked to lose your mom to cancer, I felt like I could be myself around him. And the sex was . . . I mean, I didn’t think I’d ever had truly bad sex before, but I was wrong. There was nothing mechanical about the way Jesse fucked; he was generous and vocal and revved my engine like no one else ever had. The chemistry between us was crazy good.

It wasn’t until we were at the museum that I realized the weird swell in my chest and unerasable grin Jesse inspired wasn’t only from a strong sexual attraction or the novelty of a new relationship. Something much deeper had taken root. There wasn’t a moment of our day I didn’t want to listen to what he had to say and learn what interested him and, as always, see him riled. Even if that led to a dissertation on the shift of modern painting from Paris to New York after World War II that lasted nearly the entire drive home. Mental note: abstract expressionism is not the result of leaving kindergarteners alone too long with access to paint.

Monday morning, I cruised into the administration building like I’d just won the Academy Award, the Powerball, and the World Series all in one weekend. I tried to think about any number of miserable things to get my smile down to a “Happy Monday” level, but it wasn’t working.

Zach sat up rigidly, his eyebrows drawn together. “You look weird.”

“Weird? What kind of way is that to greet your best friend?”

He tsked, clearing the papers off his desk as he waved me in. I shut the door to his office and took a seat across from him. Zach retrieved a folder from his desk drawer and lifted it. “I see you had an eventful drill meet judging by these four discipline referrals I walked in to find.”

We spoke a little about what happened, and Zach, while not happy, didn’t seem overly concerned. “Kids say dumb things, Brick. Was it an asshole thing to do? Sure. But I think this might be another case of overreaction.”

“I don’t think Jesse overreacted.”

His brow furrowed as he reread the referral. “The teacher mentioned here is Jesse Berry?”

I nodded.

He studied me skeptically. “Is there something going on with you and Jesse?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“Jesse is not a teacher I see at school functions unrelated to his position.
